Kelso Pressure Relief Valve Chosen for Sour Crude Oil Service

Thursday, October 27, 2011

We are very pleased to announce that, after a thorough review, the Kelso Pressure Relief Valve has been chosen by one of the largest petroleum companies in the world for application to their rail tank cars to be used in sour crude oil transport.  These tank cars will carry sour crude from the oil sands area in Canada to points in the US.

After evaluating the high-flow pressure relief valves currently available, the Kelso valve was chosen because it is the only pressure relief valve which is totally external to the tank car.  This means the valve components are not exposed to the sour crude which contains, among other contaminants, hydrogen sulfide.  Hydrogen sulfide causes stress corrosion cracking in steel and stainless steel which means internal spring pressure relief valve designs are not advisable for sour crude service.

This is but another example of the versatility of the Kelso constant-force spring design.  The Kelso Pressure Relief Valve is the only totally external valve rated at 75 psi and 165 psi that has flow rates above 10,000 scfm.
